Since becoming a stay-at-home mom on a single income, I’ve worked really hard to get our grocery budget under control. My goal is always to keep my family well-fed, while not wasting money. One of the biggest cost savings has been the creation of my Capsule Pantry. I keep my pantry stocked with all the essential ingredients my family uses, then shop from this first before using my pantry staples list to guide my monthly grocery order.
I’ve even made a list of meals that can be made from my pantry staples list, so that when I’m in a hurry or can’t think of supper ideas, I already have a list of meals that I know I have ingredients on-hand to make! It’s been a huge money and time saver for me. I’d love to share it with you so simplify your own grocery budget and supper situation!

What Is A Capsule Pantry?
A capsule pantry is a pantry stocked with the ingredients you regularly use. It has exactly what you need and nothing more. The goal is to simplify spending and storage space. The best way to start creating a capsule pantry is to make a list of all your favorite recipes, then look at the ingredients in each and find overlaps. Shelf-stable ingredients that are repeatedly used should be put on a list of your pantry staples. For more information, I’ve written an entire post about creating a capsule pantry here!
My Capsule Pantry Philosophy
The beauty of a capsule pantry is that you can create a list of pantry staples that best suits you and your own needs. Personally, finances are a major factor in my grocery choices, so I usually buy generic brands and try to only buy foods that can be used in at least 3 recipes. I’m also from Minnesota, so wild rice and hot dishes (or casseroles) are a regional requirement!

Pantry Essentials
To keep costs as low as possible, I like to watch for sales each week and stock up when one of these items is marked down. Beans, soups, noodles, and diced tomatoes are often on sale. Some things on this list you could make yourself, like bread, tortillas, spaghetti sauce, and pizza sauce, for additional savings.
- Rolled Oats
- White Rice
- Wild Rice
- Olive Oil
- Vinegar
- Canola Oil Spray
- Black Beans
- Refried Beans
- Kidney Beans
- Diced Tomato
- Tomato Paste
- Pizza Sauce
- Olives
- Pepperoni
- Bread Crumbs
- Cream of Mushroom Soup
- Tomato Soup
- Canned Veggies
- Noodles (variety)
- Spaghetti Sauce
- Potatoes
- Brown Gravy Mix
- Sloppy Joe Mix
- Bread
- Tortillas
- Salsa
- Chicken Broth Powder
Baking Basics
If you like to bake frequently, you might consider buying flour and sugar in bulk to save even more. I recommend a food-safe bucket with a gamma lid for storage. Chocolate chips and peanut butter may also be worth buying in bulk from a store like Costco or Sam’s Club.
- Flour
- Sugar
- Brown Sugar
- Cocoa Powder
- Powdered Sugar
- Peanut Butter
- Chocolate Chips
- Salt
- Honey
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Vanilla (make your own or buy imitation for a lower cost!)

Freezer Essentials
Meats and butter are some of the foods you can save the most on when buying on sale. Watch your local grocery store sales, especially on bacon, beef, and chicken. When they are marked down, go ahead and stock up! I also love to keep pre-diced onion and celery on hand in the freezer to speed up cooking certain meals. You can read more about how I freeze onions and celery here!
- Steamable Bags of Veggies
- Onions
- Celery
- Yeast
- Ground Beef
- Chicken Breast
- Bacon
- Ring Baloney
- Butter
Refridgerator Staples
Some people prefer blocks of cheese to pre-shredded cheese. Because I have 3 little boys, I don’t have much extra time, so I choose to buy pre-shredded cheese. I usually buy this on sale or in bulk. For added savings, I’ve found that the low-sodium Better than Bullion bases are concentrated and much cheaper (per serving) than buying pre-made broth.
- Milk
- Butter
- Eggs
- Half & Half
- Lunch Meat
- Carrots
- Shredded Mozzerella
- Shredded Cheddar
- Shredded Parmesan
- Better Than Bullion Beef Base
- Better than Bullion Vegetable Base

Customize Your Pantry Staples List
Again, this is a budget-friendly pantry staples list based on my own family recipes. If you notice in the download, I also keep a “par stock” number next to each item to keep track of how many of each item I want to keep on hand, minimum, each month. Your pantry staples list will likely look similar but different! If you have a larger budget to work with, you could also stock more of each item or more items.
