Old-Fashioned oats are a staple for Capsule Pantries, but what can you actually use them for? Here are 40 sweet and savory recipes!
One of my goals for this year is to bulk up my Capsule Pantry without spending a fortune. The goal is to have food always available for meals, even when money is tight. One way I do this is by buying in bulk when it is cheaper. We go through quite a bit of oats for oatmeal, granola, energy balls, etc., so I decided to do some research into oat prices.
It turns out the cheapest Old-Fashioned oats available (per ounce) are through Azure Standard. I finally committed and ordered my first 25# bag of oats from them, so I wrote this post in honor of this purchase. If you’re wondering what a person would do with that many oats, you’re in the right place! Here’s a lengthy list of 40 creative recipes that use old-fashioned oats!
Quick oats are similar to old-fashioned oats, except they are steamed longer and rolled thinner. This makes them cook faster and absorb water more easily. Both kinds of oats are a great source of fiber and are both naturally gluten-free.
How To Store Bulk Oats
The best way to store bulk oats for easy access is in a food-safe 5-gallon pail with a gamma lid. The gamma lid makes it easier to access oats when you use them frequently while still keeping moisture and pests out. You can find these online or even cheaper at your local Menards or Tractor Supply store. 25# of oats takes up about 1.5 buckets of this size.
How Long Are Dried Oats Good For?
In an air-tight container like the one described above, oats will last up to 2 years. They can last even longer than that if you seal them in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Because I know I will eat mine in 1 year or less, I just use the buckets with gamma lids.
