Ever wondered how to melt crayons with a muffin tin? Here’s a step-by-step guide to breathe new life into those broken old crayon pieces!

If your house is anything like mine, as a mom of littles, you’ve got tiny broken crayon pieces lying all about. Some I’ve thrown away, but plenty are still big enough to color with. Unfortunately, the kids prefer the brand-new looking crayons. That is, until we discovered how to melt crayons into “crazy crayons”! Melting these crayons down to make new, fun crayons was a super-easy, no-cost activity that the kids loved. Plus, it reduced the volume of crayon pieces without having to throw anything away. That’s a win in my book!

What You Need To Melt Crayons

  • Muffin Tin: This is the mold for the crayons. We tried a mini muffin tin and a regular-sized muffin tin. Both worked well! You can also use oven-safe silicone molds if you have those on hand.
  • Old Crayons: Gather up all your broken crayon pieces from around the house!

How To Melt Crayons

To melt crayons, start by gathering all the broken or old crayons around your house and removing their paper. Once you have all the crayon pieces free of paper, break them or cut them with a knife until they fit nicely into the muffin tins. You can put all the like colors together or go crazy and put all kinds of colors together into each cup! Make sure not to pile the crayons too high so they don’t overflow the tin.

When you have placed all your crayons into your tin, bake them in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 minutes or until they are liquified with no chunks. I put a metal baking tray under my muffin tin to make it easier to remove from the oven without spilling. Let the tin cool for about 20 minutes before putting the entire muffin tin into the freezer for another 20 minutes.

Freezing your crayons will help the wax remove from the sides of the muffin tin and make it easier to pop out. They should come out easily! Let the new, “crazy crayons” warm back up to room temperature before trying to color with them. We found that if you try to color with them cold, they don’t work. That’s it! Now you and your kids can enjoy your new, unbroken fun-colored crayons!
