Make homemade cinnamon rolls effortlessly with your bread machine! Here’s my step-by-step recipe for delicious frosted rolls.

Since becoming a stay-at-home mom, I’ve been learning a lot about living on one income. I’ve learned to save money wherever I can, especially on groceries. That’s what got me into bread machine baking in the first place! Did you know you can save a ton of grocery money with a bread machine by making bread (and bagels, pizza, cinnamon rolls, and buns) from scratch? Obviously, you can save the money by making everything by hand as well, but I really like that the machine does all the mixing and proving for me, so I can make sure my dough comes out perfect every time!

I grew up with a grandma who always had homemade desserts waiting for us after supper, and I wanted to give my own kids that same kind of cozy upbringing. Baking was new to me and didn’t come easily (hence the bread machine), but I was, and still am, determined to improve my skills by baking with normal ingredients I already have in my cupboards. That’s how I came to love these bread machine cinnamon rolls! There’s nothing more homey than fresh-baked and frosted rolls.

What Ingredients Do I Need To Make Cinnamon Rolls?

  • Milk: I used 2% milk for these rolls pictured, but I’ve used whole milk. This recipe has not been tested with non-dairy alternatives. Milk or half & half is also used to thin the frosting over the rolls
  • Egg: Makes the dough soft and rich
  • Vanilla Extract: flavor to the rolls and frosting
  • Butter: Makes the dough rich due to the fat content. This is also used in the frosting.
  • Salt: flavor
  • Flour: All-purpose flour provides structure for the rolls
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar gives the rolls their sweet flavor and feeds the yeast to cause it to rise
  • Yeast: Gives the rolls their rise
  • Brown Sugar: gives sweetness and flavor throughout the inner rings of the rolls
  • Cinnamon: Flavor
  • Powdered Sugar: provides sweet flavor and mass to the frosting

How To Make Bread Machine Cinnamon Rolls

Time needed: 3 hours and 25 minutes

  1. Mix Wet Ingredients

Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl, then add the milk and egg together. Mix until the egg is well beaten, then pour it into the bread machine.

  2. Make Dough

Add the rest of the dry ingredients to the bread machine and begin the “Dough” setting. My machine has this setting running for 1 hour and 30 minutes, but each machine varies.bread machine cinnamon rolls recipe

  3. Roll Dough

Once complete, roll out the dough into a rectangle 12″x 18″. To do this, after rolling, press the dough into a rectangle with your hands to shape. Do not cut off extra dough to make it into a rectangle. This ensures you have large, full cinnamon rolls. Cover in melted butter.

  4. Spread Filling

Coat the buttered dough in the cinnamon and brown sugar mixture. Make sure to cover all the way to the edges.

  5. Shape Into Log

Roll the dough into a tight, round log along the long side.

  6. Divide Into Rolls

Cut into 9 equal parts. You can measure this or eyeball it. I eyeball it, but cut it into 3 equal parts, then each of those parts into 3 more equal parts.

  7. Rise

Place all 9 rolls with the swirl visible in a greased 9×9 pan. Let rise for 1 hour.

  8. Bake

After the rolls have risen, bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes or until golden brown and cooked all the way through the center. If your tops are getting brown but the inside is still doughy, cover the buns with aluminum foil to prevent the tops from burning.

  9. Apply Frosting

While the bread machine cinnamon rolls cool, mix the butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar together in a small bowl. Add the milk (or half & half) 1 Tbsp at a time until frosting reaches your desired consistency. Pour frosting over the cinnamon rolls while they are still a little warm and enjoy!

Enjoying Your Bread Machine Cinnamon Rolls

These frosted cinnamon rolls are best eaten fresh, but can be stored at room temperature on the counter for up to 5 days. However, they are best eaten within 3 days. Because they rise too tall for my 9×9 pan cover to fit over them, I like to use plastic wrap or even a clear elastic cover like this.
