In a Nutshell:

DIY Bread machine hamburger buns are cheaper than store-bought buns and easier to make than you’d think! They require sugar, flour, egg, water, yeast, and salt, which costs under $1 to make! Homemade bread machine hamburger buns take under 3 hours to make, but only about 10 minutes of active time. They can last 4-5 days on the countertop or months in the freezer.

If you’ve been following my homemaking journey, you already know how excited I’ve been about my bread machine. If you’re new here, I’ve been trying to find ways to make as much as I can from scratch to save money without wasting time. A bread machine is one of the recent and most exciting finds for accomplishing this! I started by making sandwich bread, but then discovered even more options like pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, hamburger buns, hot dog buns, bagels, and rolls. With the money I’ve saved, I’ve already more than paid for my second-hand bread machine!

Are Homemade Hamburger Buns Cheaper Than Store-Bought?

Yes, homemade hamburger buns are cheaper to make than store-bought buns. The current price of cheap hamburger buns from Walmart’s Great Value is $1.46. Making buns at home is well under $1. Plus, the buns you make at home are better tasting and resemble a brand-name bun, so the savings are even higher!

The Downside of Bread Machine Hamburger Buns

The only downside of using a bread machine to make hamburger buns is that it can only make 8 at a time. If you need to make a larger quantity, you’d have to do multiple batches or make the dough by hand or with a mixer instead. Thankfully, buns from this recipe freeze easily, so if you do find yourself having extra time, you could keep extra buns in your freezer for times when you need more!

Ingredients In Homemade Hamburger Buns

  • Water– Provides moisture and helps activate the yeast
  • Bread Flour– Provides structure for the buns
  • Yeast-Responsible for the rise of the buns, causing them to be fluffy and soft
  • Sugar– Gives color and flavor
  • Salt– Adds flavor
  • Egg– provides both structure and flavor inside the buns and creates a glossy shine to the outside of the buns as an egg wash.
  • Butter– adds a smooth, butter flavor

Time needed: 3 hours

  1. Combine Ingredients

Pour water, sugar, and yeast into the bread machine

  2. Combine Wet ingredients

Beat 1 egg into the melted butter separately, then pour it into the bread machine

  3. Add Flour And Salt

Add flour and salt last to separate salt from the rest of the ingredients. This is to prevent the salt from killing the yeast, which would ruin your rise on the final product.

  4. Run The Dough Cycle

When all ingredients have been added, run the “dough” cycle on your bread machine. On mine, it is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  5. Divide Dough

When the dough cycle is complete, pour out the dough onto a floured surface and divide it into 8 equal pieces.

  6. Roll

Roll each piece of dough into a ball by pulling the tops tight and the seams to the bottom. This will make a smooth, domed top to your hamburger buns

  7. Rise

Place the buns onto a greased baking sheet with 2 inches between each bun. Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size. If you’re rising in a warm area, this could take less than 1 hour.

  8. Egg Wash

Once risen, cover each bun with an egg wash to give it a shine and help create a golden color once baked.

  9. Bake

Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Bread Machine Hamburger Buns Recipe

Since finding this recipe, I haven’t bought hamburger buns from the store at all. It takes 1 hour and 30 minutes in my bread machine, about 10 minutes to roll and cut, 1 hour to rise, and another 10 minutes to bake. That’s just under 3 hours, but only 10 minutes of active time! Because I keep hamburgers stocked in our freezer, I can whip up a batch of buns any time and have dinner ready without having to go to the store!

  • Set bread machine to the "dough" setting and press start
  • When the cycle is finished, pour out dough onto a floured surface

  • When buns have risen, brush tops with an egg wash.
  • Bake buns at 350℉ for 20-24 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

It’s important to separate the salt from the yeast in your bread machine to keep it from killing the yeast and lessening the rise of your final product.  I recommend adding salt last.

Storing Bread Machine Hamburger Buns

Because bread machine hamburger buns are homemade, they don’t have any preservatives in them. They do not last as long as store-bought buns. The quality is best on the first day, but homemade buns can last 4-5 days on the countertop, and last for many months in the freezer.

Before storing, make sure your hamburger buns are fully cooled. If they are not, the heat coming off them will create condensation in the bag and cause them to get tacky and damp. For the best storage, wrap the buns in a tea towel and put them into a gallon-size Ziplock or airtight storage box.
